Ægishjálmur Skull
£89.00
the Ægishjálmur on this skull is burnt deep into the bone, each of its eight arms darkened into the surface like a scar that refuses to heal. The heat leaving its own signature, fractures and smoke trails no paint or brush can mimic.
Placed as it is across the forehead of the skull, this symbol becomes more than protection; it becomes a warning burned into mortality itself. It is the piece that stands watching and whispering.
The Ægishjálmur appears in the old Norse sources (Völsunga Saga) and is described as a symbol that is drawn on the forehead (usually in blood) or carved onto shields to strike fear into the enemy and to grant courage to the wearer. However there is no early description of the symbol, for that we turn to the 17th century Icelandic Grimoires (Black Books) like the Galdrabók where it appears as the design we are familiar today. It appears as a symbol that protects against defeat, illness, and malice.
Burnt onto bone this symbol returns to that raw, primal logic: fear reversed, turned back outward like spines raised against the dark.
This is a Roe Deer skull which was ethically sourced from a deer that had already passed from this life, in choosing this skull you choose to honour the life of this beautiful Roe Deer.
